Scott Verzyl, associate vice president for enrollment management at the University of South Carolina, received the prestigious Strategic Enrollment Management (SEM) Award of Excellence at the annual American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers SEM conference.
Verzyl was chosen to receive the award for his leadership and outstanding accomplishments at USC, and for his contribution to the enrollment management field.
“It is clear that Scott’s personal style, strategic thinking and collaborative effort in implementing numerous initiatives have been instrumental to the University of South Carolina’s success,” says Susan Gottheil, vice provost at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. “Scott has also been very generous in sharing his innovative ideas and expertise by presenting at a variety of conferences and serving on many committees and boards for national organizations.”
The award committee noted that despite a declining economy, increasingly competitive college landscape and shrinking budgets, USC has exceeded freshman class recruitment goals. In the past 10 years, the university was one of only eight public research institutions in the country that raised its freshman class SAT average by at least 80 points, and of those top eight, USC obtained the highest percentage enrollment increase at 17.3 percent.
“Scott has built a data-driven culture that gets results,” says Dennis Pruitt, vice provost and vice president for student affairs at USC. “His use of marketing research and new technologies has enabled USC to provide exceptional service to our students, to raise our freshman academic profile, to grow our class size and to increase the diversity of our applicants.”
Verzyl currently serves on the College Board’s National College Scholarship Assembly Nominating Committee and Southern Regional Council. He also has served as chair of the South Carolina ACT Council and chair of the SEC Admissions Network. Verzyl frequently presents at both regional and national enrollment management conferences throughout the United States.
