University to celebrate Homecoming Oct. 22 – 24
Homecoming at the University of South Carolina offers students, alumni and the public an array of events to show their Gamecock spirit and support for the state’s flagship university.
This year’s theme is “The Spirit of South Carolina: Anchors Away,” with details available at the university’s Homecoming Website: www.homecoming.sc.edu
Festivities get under way 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, with Cockfest at Williams-Brice Stadium. The annual pep rally, which is free and open to the public, will feature Cocky, the Carolina cheerleaders and dance team, the Homecoming Court, performances by local bands “Friday Night Fix” and “Zach Fowler and the Essentials” and Sound Check, the university’s male a capella group, and fireworks.
The fun continues Friday, Oct. 23, with the Homecoming Parade at 2 p.m., led by grand marshall Tammy Johns, Mrs. United States 2009 and a university graduate. The steps in front of Longstreet Theatre (corner of Sumter and Green streets) offer the best vantage point for watching the parade of more than a dozen student-built floats, cheerleaders and the marching band.
Friday night will feature two events for alumni: the Homecoming Party and Awards Gala and a Vista party.
The Homecoming Party and Awards Gala begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Carolina Metropolitan Convention Center. There, the Carolina Alumni Association and the university will honor five alumni for their outstanding commitment to the university, their communities or their professions. Tickets are $39 each and available online at www.MyCarolina.org/homecoming
The Young Alumni Council and the Black Alumni Council will enjoy a night of fun and fellowship from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Carolina Ale House on Lady Street in the Vista. The event is free.
The focus turns to Gamecock football on Saturday with the Game Day Celebration for alumni and their families at 4 p.m. at the National Guard Armory. Hosted by the Carolina Alumni Association, this annual event features plenty of music, food and fun. Tickets cost $15 for alumni association members, $25 for non-members and $8.50 for children (ages 10 and younger) and can be purchased online at www.MyCarolina.org/homecoming. The Black Alumni Council will host its annual tailgate at 5 p.m. at Bernie’s on Bluff Road. Tickets are $10 each and available online at the alumni association Web site.
Many of the university’s colleges and schools also will have open houses and receptions throughout Homecoming Weekend.
