As a part of campus-wide sustainability efforts, USC’s Custodial Services has begun its comprehensive green cleaning initiative for all of the facilities in its service area on the Columbia campus.
USC will be using products manufactured by Johnson Diversey and considered Healthy High Performance Cleaning products. These products will be used throughout the Columbia campus, according to Marion Morris, custodial operation manager.
Only products meeting the standards set by the Green Seal organization, a non-profit organization that identifies and promotes products and services that cause less toxic pollution and waste, conserves resources and habitats, and minimizes global warming and ozone depletion, were selected for the program.
The initiative follows performance tests on several products to choose a brand that gives a systematic approach to implementing green cleaning products into USC’s housekeeping program.
According to research, institutions that integrate green cleaning products into their operations, experience improved indoor air quality. This effect has been proven to reduce absenteeism by as much as 23 percent, increase employee retention by as much as 12 percent and can improve productivity by as much as 6 percent.
