Blair was a faculty member of the School of Public Health before being named director of The Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, in 1980. He was president and CEO of The Cooper Institute from 2002 – 06, when he returned to Carolina as a professor in the department of exercise science and the department of epidemiology and biostatistics.
A past president of the American College of Sports Medicine, Blair is a recipient of the U.S. Surgeon General’s Medal, the MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association’s Population Science Award.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from Kansas Wesleyan University and master’s and doctoral degrees from Indiana University.
