Summertime fun at Camp Read-a-Rama

By Megan Sexton, msexton@mailbox.sc.edu, 803-777-1421

Summer offers a perfect opportunity to get kids excited about reading – especially when book time is combined with swimming, crafts, music and games.

That’s what children will find at Camp Read-a-Rama, a day camp for children ages 4 to 11. The camp is directed by founder Michelle Martin, the University of South Carolina’s Augusta Baker Chair in Childhood Literacy, and it’s designed to improve attitudes about reading among children and their parents. It can even act as the perfect antidote to the “summer slide” – whereby students lose ground academically during the months off from school.

The camp’s first summer session begins June 24, and registration for each of the five sessions is now open. Here is the schedule, along with the topics and locations, for upcoming camps:

June 24-28: Let’s Have a Ball. Imagine Columbia Leadership Academy, 3810 N. Main St.

July 8-12: Zoo-rific! Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1715 Broad River Rd.

July 15-19: Girls Go Green. Westminster Presbyterian Church

July 22-26: Crazy Scientists, Crazier Experiments. Imagine Columbia Leadership Academy. July 29-Aug. 2: Splash-tastic! Rosewood Baptist Church, 2901 Rosewood Drive

To register or for more information, see read-a-rama.org. For questions, contact Martin at (803) 777-1215 or martinmi@sc.edu

Also this summer, the Science of Reading Summer Institute -- a program intended for public and school librarians, tutors and teachers – will be hosted by the Richland Library and USC’s School of Library and Information Science and College of Education.

The institute will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. June 24 and July 2, 9, 16 and 23 at the Richland Library, 1431 Assembly St. For more information and registration information, contact Michelle Martin, (803) 777-1215 or see http://saeu.sc.edu/reg/sor
