Eboo Patel to speak on leadership, religious conflict
Eboo Patel, executive director of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), will address students, faculty and staff at the University of South Carolina on “Acts of Faith: Interfaith Leadership at a Time of Global Religious Crisis.”
The lecture will take place at 8 p.m. on Oct. 12 in the Russell House ballroom with a book signing immediately afterward. Patel will discuss leading diverse communities in a way that promotes service and encourages youth to discover common values.
“In a world too often convinced of the inevitable clash of civilizations, how do we lead our communities of faith to work with people from different religious and philosophical backgrounds and serve the common good?” said Patel. “From Martin Luther King Jr. to Mahatma Gandhi, Dorothy Day to Abraham Joshua Heschel, the answer is clear: interfaith leadership.”
Patel is the author of the award-winning book, “Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation,” and frequently contributes to The Washington Post, National Public Radio and CNN. He is also a member of President Obama’s Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
The address is sponsored by the following organizations: Carolina Productions, Office of the President, Islamic World Studies Program, Walker Institute for International and Area Studies, Office of Student Affairs and Academic Support, Methodist Student Network, Muslim Student Association, Newman Club, Presbyterian Student Association and Students Associated with Latin America. It is open to USC students, faculty and staff with the presentation of a valid Carolina ID card.
Patel will also speak with students interested in interfaith work in the SEC Room at 12:15 p.m. and with faculty and staff at 3:30 p.m. in the ODK Room in the Russell House. To attend either session, call (803) 777-6688.
