‘Cosi’ set for Oct. 1 – 4 in experimental actor training space
The University of South Carolina’s department of theatre and dance will present Louis Nowra’s endearing comedy, “Cosi,” Oct. 1 - 4 in the newly created Center for Performance Experiment at Hamilton Gymnasium.
Curtain Times are 8 p.m. Oct. 1 and 4; 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3. Admission for all shows is $10, payable at the door only.
The Center for Performance Experiment at Hamilton Gymnasium is located at the corner of Pendleton and Pickens streets, in the Gibbes Green section of the university campus.
A madcap look at theatre behind the scenes, “Cosi” is ultimately a fresh, startling play about personal dreams, madness, ambition, disappointment, creativity and transformation. A young Australian director, looking for purpose and meaning in his life, lands a job directing a group of inexperienced but colorful performers in a mental institution. The motley band of players prepares to perform Mozart’s “Cosi Fan Tutte.” But can they sing? And who speaks Italian?
Professor Steven Pearson, head of the master’s program in acting, will direct this production.
“We are thrilled to see “Cosi” as the debut production in this unique performance venue,” said Jim Hunter, department chair and artistic director. “For several years, we have used the gymnasium as a space for physical exploration in acting. It is heartening to now welcome our audiences into this very special location.”

“Cosi” was adapted by Nowra into a major motion picture, directed by Mark Joffe and starring Toni Collete, Rachel Griffiths and Barry Otto. The university’s production incorporates dialogue from the screenplay.
Appearing in the production will be graduate students Brian Clowdus, LaToya Codner, Daniel Hill, Ryan Krause, Katie Krueger, Sonya Thompson, Lin Ying and Todd Zimbleman and undergraduate Esteban Nevarez.
