‘Ballet Stars of New York’ arrive March 20

Five New York City ballet dancers will grace a Columbia stage for the fifth annual “Ballet Stars of New York” concert, which is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, March 20, at the Koger Center.

Tickets are $15 for students, $25 for second balcony, $30 for first balcony and $35 for orchestra. Gala tickets are $150, which includes admission to the pre-concert reception and post-concert dinner dance. Call the Koger Center box office at 803-777-2551 for tickets. To charge by phone, call 803-251-2222.

Returning from the New York City Ballet are principal dancers Wendy Whelan, Albert Evans and Jared Angle. Fellow NYCB dancers Daniel Ulbricht and Columbia’s Sara Mearns also will perform.

Mearns, who was born in Columbia, studied under Columbia ballet teaching legend Ann Brodie and also with Susan Anderson at the USC Dance Conservatory. Mearns’ brother, Keith, is a student at the university and a member of the USC Dance Company and will appear in the concert.

“We are all so proud to have had a hand in training Sara Mearns, who was a student at the USC Dance Conservatory and the South Carolina Summer Dance Conservatory in her youth before entering the School of American Ballet, the training program for the NYCB,” said artistic director Susan Anderson. “Her career to stardom as ballerina for the New York City Ballet happened just as planned, and she became an overnight sensation. She will be the ballerina of the 21st century.”

Stacey Calvert, USC Dance associate director and a former soloist with the NYCB, will lead the concert as creative director. Music for the concert will be performed by the USC Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Donald Portnoy.

“‘Ballet Stars’ is a great opportunity for Columbia dance lovers who may not have the opportunity to travel to New York to see a very special brand of world-class talent right here in our city,” said Calvert.

The concert repertoire will include “Stars and Stripes” and “Mozartiana” by choreographer George Balanchine and “Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux” by choreographer William Forsythe.

Last year’s concert featured the pas de deux movement from “Stars and Stripes.” This year, the entire “Stars and Stripes” ballet will be performed.

“Stars and Stripes” will feature a cast of 35, including Mearns, Ulbricht and Angle dancing solo roles. Senior dance majors Olivia Anderson and Bonnie Boiter-Jolley will also perform solo roles. “Mozartiana” will feature Mearns, Angle and Ulbrecht, as well as four young dancers from the SC Dance Conservatory under the tutelage of Stacey Calvert. “Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux” will feature Whelan and Evans.
