During the tenures of its first two deans--Roderick MacDonald (1976-83) and O'Neal Humphries (1983-94)--the USC School of Medicine:

- Achieved full accreditation
- Chartered and established a chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society
- Appointed department chairs in pediatrics, internal medicine, and obstetrics/gynecology
- Established residencies in neuropsychiatry and behavioral science at William S. Hall Psychiatric Institute
- Obtained property adjacent to Richland Memorial Hospital for clinical campus
- Established School of Medicine Partnership Board
- Established Greenville Hospital Clinical Rotation
- Created the Joint Health and Medical Education Committee, which capped enrollment at USC's School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina at 200 (125 at MUSC; 75 at USC SOM)
- Established first Rural Primary Care Education Center in Winnsboro.
