USC faculty to discuss lessons learned from Iraqi War April 22

More than a dozen USC faculty will host a teach-in for students and the public April 22 to discuss lessons learned from the war with Iraq.

The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. in Gambrell Hall and is free and open to the public. "After Iraq: Lessons from the Current Conflict" will feature general sessions and group discussions.

"Our intent is to provide a forum for scholars, students, and the public to come together to share information and stimulate debate about the causes and costs of the war with Iraq, the general direction of U.S. policy, the responsibilities of the media in times of crisis, and the aftermath of war," said Greg Forter, English, event coordinator.

From 7–7:30 p.m. in Room 250, faculty will outline three discussion topics, including the following:

• "The Genesis of the War in U.S. Domestic and Foreign Policy"
• "The Responsibilities of the Media"
• "The Arts and Humanities and the Human Face of War."

From 7:30 to 8:45 p.m., students and members of the public can participate in one of the three group discussions, which will take place in locations throughout the building. Everyone will reconvene at 8:45 p.m. in Room 250 for an overview of each group discussion and concluding remarks.

Participating USC faculty members are government and international studies experts Betty Glad, Lee Jane Kaufman, Peter Sederberg, and David Whiteman; historians Dan Carter, Ken Clements, and Michael Scardaville; literature and media experts Susan Courtney, Forter, and Paula Feldman; religious studies scholar Hal French; public health expert James Hebert; and law professor Don Wedlock.

The teach-in is sponsored by Students Allied for a Greener Earth (SAGE).

For more information, contact Forter at 7-2332, 799-6121, or gforter1@gwm.sc.edu.
