"The Boys of 2nd Street Park," a film directed and produced by USC graduate Dan Klores, will be shown in the Russell House Theater at 8p.m. Nov. 18.
USC president Andrew Sorensen will introduce Klores at the event, which is free and open to the public. Klores will introduce the documentary and answer questions after the screening.
"The Boys of 2nd Street Park" traces the lives of six friends from their childhood days in Brighton Beach in the 1950s to the present. The film was screened at the Sundance Film Festival this last year and was broadcast on Showtime in September. The men featured in the film were childhood friends of Klores, and each one has a unique story to tell, from one's Harvard education to another's homelessness.
"I am especially pleased that Dan Klores will meet with media arts students because 'The Boys of 2nd Street Park' is a personal documentary that speaks to a broad audience," said assistant professor of media arts Karla Berry. "Klores tells the story of the 'Boys' in a way that suggests the rites of passage we all experience. As viewers, we reflect on our own friends and hardships. As media producers, students learn the value of telling stories from their own lives."
Klores is an innovator and prominent figure in the public relations industry with more than 20 years of experience. He built a successful firm in New York City with clients who have included Estee Lauder, Jennifer Lopez, the NFL, the NBA, Sean "P.Diddy" Combs, and Michael Jackson. He has written numerous articles for various magazine publications, including New York Magazine, Esquire, and The Village Voice. He produced Paul Simon's musical, "The Capeman," and was an executive producer for the film, "City by the Sea," which starred Robert De Niro.
After graduating from USC, Klores made a living by teaching in prison, working at a collection agency, and writing political ads and freelance articles for New York Magazine and The Daily News. He eventually landed a job in Howard J. Rubenstein's public-relations firm. He established his own firm, Dan Klores' Communications, in 1991, and it has grown into one of the largest independent public-relations firms in the country.
