Baritone Sherrill Milnes, one of the most recorded opera stars in history, will teach master classes for USC vocal students Jan. 30–31.
Milnes, who performed at the Koger Center in 1992, will open the classes to opera enthusiasts who want to observe at a cost of $15 a day. The classes will be held at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 30, and 2:30 p.m. Jan. 31. At 6 p.m. Jan. 31, students will give a free public performance, demonstrating what they learned under the direction of Milnes. All events will be held in the School of Music Recital Hall.

Milnes made his first important debut with the New York City Opera as Valentin in Gounod's Faust in 1964. In that same role a year later, he made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera.
Milnes became an opera star in 1968 when he performed as Miller in Verdi's Luisa Miller. His international career began in 1970 with Macbeth at the Vienna State Opera. He has since performed in all of the opera capitals of the world.
Milnes also performs as a recitalist and in concert, appearing on recital stages and orchestras in the United States. He has the distinction of being the most recorded American opera singer with a discography of more than 60 recordings on all of the major labels, encompassing his opera roles, lieder, oratorio, symphony, and folksong.
In 2000, Milnes and his wife, Maria Zouvres, founded VOICExperience, a nonprofit organization. VOICExperience helps young singers develop and pursue their careers with programming throughout the country and especially in a summer opera program at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
Milnes is currently the John Evans Distinguished Professor of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
