USC President Andrew A. Sorensen is taking to the highways of South Carolina for another "Bow Tie Bus Tour" to discuss the university's achievements and challenges with students, educators, community leaders, and USC alumni.
Sorensen, known for his trademark bow tie, will begin the 2004 Presidential Tour March 8, with stops in Cheraw, Dillon, Florence and Camden.
In addition to stops throughout South Carolina, the Presidential Tour also will include trips to Atlanta March 15 and Raleigh, N.C., March 29, where Sorensen will meet with university alumni and donors.
The Presidential Tour originated in the fall of 2002 during Sorensen's first year as USC's president with the "Bow Tie Bus Tour." The tour, which went through all of the state's 46 counties, gave Sorensen the opportunity to listen to South Carolinians about their thoughts on higher education.
"On the first tour, I met people from all walks of life," Sorensen said. "I learned about their concerns for higher education, including rising tuition costs, and their appreciation for the university's outreach programs that improve the lives of people in every corner of the state."
On the second tour, Sorensen said he will talk about his vision for the university, including the new research campus, and faculty and student achievements.
"Over the past two years, USC students, faculty, and staff have worked diligently to excel in every area, from research and outreach to teaching and learning," Sorensen said. "The university has formed collaborations with other colleges and universities in our state that will enhance our education, research, and outreach programs."
Sorensen's tour will include:
- March 11: Orangeburg, Bamberg, Charleston
- March 15: Atlanta
- March 22: Greenwood, Due West, Clemson, Greenville
- March 29: Raleigh, N.C.
- April 19: Charlotte
- April 26: Myrtle Beach
- May 20: Columbia
