Like all artists, USC MFA art student Rocky Lewycky has an artist's statement. But it is Lewycky who will make an artistic statement when he gives away 400 pieces of ceramic art at 3 p.m. April 24 at the Columbia Museum of Art.
At the "Free Art" event, each participant will have no more than one minute to choose a piece from the array of containers and vessels, most which have Eastern artistic design elements.
His Web site (www.rocksart.com) has striking photos of his work.
Why free?
"Within this culture, 'free' is loosely associated with every promotion as a discount, rather than its inherent function as a gift without expected return," Lewycky said. "I want 'Free Art' to challenge both these unfortunate Darwinist paths of the word 'free' in hopes of re-evaluating our concept of a gift."
Lewycky earned his bachelor's degree in art from San Diego State University.
