McKissick Museum’s extensive holdings revealed in first-ever catalog

USC’s McKissick Museum recently released its first comprehensive catalog, filled with colorful photographs and text of the museum's extensive collection of Southern folk art.

Telling the Story, a 58-page, soft-cover publication, features text and photos to detail the museum's strength and emphasis on Southern folk arts and to highlight the museum's impressive holdings in political history, fine art, and decorative arts.

Objects highlighted include the official chair used by the Colonial Royal Governor of Carolina and made by Thomas Elfe, and art works by former faculty artists Tom Feelings, Philip Mullen, and Katherine Rembert.

Telling the Story is $20 and is available through the museum. The catalog was funded in part by the USC Bicentennial Campaign and through fund raising by the McKissick Museum Advisory Council.

Established in 1976, McKissick Museum is a repository for the University's collections dating back to the early 19th century when S.C. College and the Charleston Museum were the only repositories for the state’s artifacts.

The museum is free and open to the public from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday–Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
