The latest Web exhibit from Thomas Cooper Library's Special Collections is "Lewis and Clark: Discovering the American West." The site can be found online at www.sc.edu/library/spcoll/amlit/l&c/l&c.html.
The exhibit draws on materials from Thomas Cooper Library's Alfred Chapin Rogers Collection, the original South Carolina College library, and other special collections to provide a narrative of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
Illustrations or near-contemporary illustrations of Lewis and Clark's route, the peoples they encountered, and the animals they discovered, include images from Karl Bodmer, Travels; McKenney and Hall, Indians; and Audubon, Quadrupeds. It also has links for full pages of original sources, including first editions of the reports, Jefferson's messages to Congress, and the Louisiana Purchase Treaty.
Thomas Cooper Library's special collections Web-exhibits represent a wide range of historical periods, from the Renaissance to the present day, and varied topics, from early printing to natural history, history of science, exploration, military history, and British and American literature. A list of these online exhibits is available at www.sc.edu/library/spcoll/rarebook.html.
