John O'Neil III, a painter and former head of USC's art department, died in Columbia Dec. 12. He was 72 years old.
Current department chairman Phillip Dunn says O'Neil had pneumonia.
O'Neil served as a mentor to young artists and professors during his nearly 25-year tenure as head of the art department.
Dunn says USC's art department grew through O'Neil's leadership.
O'Neil's work appeared in more than 250 exhibitions at museums and galleries across the country, including the Southeastern Center
for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Center of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles and the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.
He came to USC in 1963.
