Social Work to celebrate second Social Justice Day April 4

The College of Social Work I.DeQuincey Newman Institute for Peace and Justice will hold its second-annual Social Justice Day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 4 in the Daniel Management Center at the Moore School of Business. The day is designed to specifically address social justice through a variety of mediums and activities. It is a common day for all students, alumni, faculty and staff to come together to focus on a common need.
Lorraine Gutierrez

Featured speaker is Lorraine Gutierrez, a professor of social work at the University of Michigan whose teaching and research focus on multicultural and community organization practice. She brings to her work social work practice and research in multiethnic communities in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, and Seattle. Current projects include identifying methods for multicultural community based research and practice, and identifying effective methods for learning about social justice. She has published over thirty articles, chapters, or books on topics such as empowerment, multicultural practice, and women of color.

In addition, Marcia Uddah, liaison-educator for Coatlaxopeuh, Houston, Texas, will facilitate the Peace Game, and five expressions of social justice will be presented. These are:

1. "Choices and Voices: Participation of People With HIV in Planning Services," Cynthia Poindexter, Fordham University

2. "A Conversation: Is Adoption a Social Justice Issue?" Jana Sommers and Annette Boette

3. "Defining and Reclaiming Feminism: a Practical Approach for Promoting Social Justice in the Lives of Everyone," Kendra Deloach

4. "Social Justice Tolerance of Social Work Majors," Besty Price

5. "Native Americans of SC: The Invisible Population," Robert Hardee, Donna Oh, and Cathy Nelson.
