The College of Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management recently named its Harry E. Varney Distinguished Teacher of the Year and Researcher of the Year.
Dean Pat Moody presented this years Teacher of the Year award to Frank Roach, Department of Sport and Entertainment Management, and Researcher of the Year award to Marguerite Moore, Department of Retailing.
After a successful career in the entertainment industry, Roach changed his path to become a professor. Students who nominated Roach for the award noted that he is a professor with impressive real-world insight and is always generous with his time. Upon presentation of his award, Moody said the day Frank Roach made the decision to come to the University of South Carolina was a lucky day for the faculty, staff, and most importantly, the students of the college.
Moore, who has published 16 articles since 2000, presents her research both nationally and internationally and has experienced recent success in research funding with grants totaling more than $50,000. Moody congratulated Moore on her award and told the group, Dr. Moores research excellence brings prestige to our college.
Roach and Moore were joined by three other finalists for the award. Cathy Gustafson and Betsy Bender were finalists for Teacher of the Year, and Tena Crews was a finalist for Researcher of the Year. This years ceremony marked the 30th anniversary of the colleges award program. Tina Weaver, chair of the awards selection committee, said, This is proof that this college has always supported and continues to support excellence in teaching.
