Carolinas Army ROTC unit, the Gamecock Battalion, has created a scholarship fund in honor of Army Maj. Edward J. Murphy, 91, of Mt. Pleasant, who died April 6 when the CH-47 helicopter in which he was riding crashed in Ghanzi, Afghanistan.
Murphy, 36, who held a bachelors degree in history from the University, was assigned to the U.S. Army Southern European Task Force, Camp Ederle, Italy.
The fund was authorized by Lt. Col. John J. Moring, Gamecock Battalion commander and professor of military science, in remembrance of Murphy and Gamecock officers of the past, present, and future who may be called to duty in the war on terror.
Contributions by check or money order for the Edward J. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Fund can be sent to: The Department of Military Science, Army ROTC, 902 Sumter Access, Legare College, Room 204, USC, Columbia, SC 29208.
Checks should be made payable to The USC Educational Foundation. The For line at the bottom of the check or money order should include the following information; Army ROTC Scholarship Fund, Acct No. 1A1271.
