Navy ROTC has new commanding officer

The USC Naval ROTC has a new commanding officer and professor of naval science. Captain James Kruse relieved Captain David Logsdon during a small change-of- command ceremony held at the NROTC Amory Aug. 11.

Kruse comes to the Gamecock Battalion from his most recent assignment as deputy director for plans, commander sixth fleet, Gaeta, Italy. Prior to Italy, Kruse’s assignments included serving as a fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and commanding officer of Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron-4 in San Diego, Calif. As commanding officer of HS-4, Kruse deployed on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln as part of Airwing 14.

Kruse completed his undergraduate studies at Central Michigan University. Following commissioning, he completed training as a naval aviator on the SH-3H helicopter. Kruse also has a master’s degree in national security affairs from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.

Logsdon, a 1975 graduate of USC NROTC, will transition to the civilian sector having completed 30 years of naval service. Prior to heading USC’s Department of Naval Science, he was the commanding officer of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman.
