USC Symphony announces 2005–06 season

The USC Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2005–06 season, which includes performances by violinist Mark O'Connor, pianist Per Tengstrand, and cellist Robert Jesselson. Donald Portnoy conducts.

Performances take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Koger Center for the Arts.

The schedule is:

  • September 22, with Mark O'Connor
    The New York Times refers to him as “a polystylist who refuses to be tied down to any one genre.” Violinist Mark O’Connor performs his very own Violin Concerto No. 6 (Old Brass). This season opener will also include Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8.

  • October 20, with Per Tengstrand
    Described by The Washington Post as possessing “fearsome technique
    and the ability to blaze through a score,” Swedish pianist
    Tengstrand will perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor). This concert will also feature Shostakovich’s Festive Overture and Franck’s Symphony in D-minor.

  • November 17, with Robert Jesselson
    USC School of Music's professor of cello Jesselson will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, op. 33. The orchestra will also showcase Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture and Schumann’s Symphony No. 1 (Spring).

  • February 21, 2006, with Joseph Eller
    Joining the USC School of Music faculty, Kennesaw State professor
    Joseph Eller will perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto. The concert
    will also include area choirs with guest soloists performing

  • March 21, 2006, with Marina Lomazov, Joseph Rackers, and Young Artist Competition Winners
    Celebrate the dazzling musicianship of pianists Lomazov and Rackers as they perform Mozart’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E-flat Major. This evening’s concert will also present Tchaikovsky’s Mozartiana and performances from the 2006 USC Young Artist Competition winners.

  • April 18, 2006, with Vadim Gluzman
    Violinist Gluzman is “capable of both delicate nuances and incendiary passion,” (The Washington Post) with
    “… dexterity and drama to burn” (The Columbus Dispatch). Gluzman will perform Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole. This season finale will also feature Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony).
