School of Music to present concert Oct. 4 for Hurricane Katrina relief

The School of Music will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 4, at the Koger Center to benefit Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.

The “USC Cares: Renewal Through Music” concert will benefit South Carolina Cares, a private, nonprofit organization aiding the Hurricane Katrina victims who have relocated to the Midlands. Seating is first come, first served, and a contribution of $10 per person is encouraged.

“We are so privileged to be able to present this concert on behalf of persons displaced from the Gulf Coast as a result of the Katrina disaster,” said Tayloe Harding, dean of the School of Music. “We hope that it will be part of a nationally coordinated concert series effort for which the USC School of Music is planning three concerts. Each of these concerts, beginning with ‘USC Cares: Renewal Through Music’ this Tuesday, will benefit a different group of persons affected by Katrina.”

Harding said that the School of Music is arranging transportation for families who have relocated to Columbia so they can be honored at the concert.

The concert’s program is an eclectic blend of traditional and patriotic music with jazz and steel-drum selections. Ensembles include the USC Wind Ensemble, the Palmetto Pans Steel Drum Band, USC Jazz Combo, and a clarinet quintet. Faculty artists will include Cliff Leaman, Rebecca Nagel, Scott Herring, Jerry Curry, Jacob Will, and Helen Tintes.

South Carolina Cares is a co-sponsor of the concert. To make a contribution to the relief effort, send a check, payable to South Carolina Cares, Box 608, Columbia, 29202. For more information, call Leslie Wrenn at 6-5897 or go to www.music.sc.edu.
