USC School of Music professor, pianist to perform farewell concert

USC School of Music professor John Williams will present his final concert at 7:30 p.m. April 17 in the school's recital hall. Williams, a teacher of piano and bassoon for 38 years at USC, will retire this summer.

"Though we are sad to see him retire this year, we are delighted that his comprehensive musicianship, great sense of humor, and overall goodwill will still be frequent in our halls and in our midst in the years to come," said Tayloe Harding, dean of the School of Music. "His upcoming farewell recital is the culmination of his many years of service as an artist-teacher of piano and should be an unforgettable evening for all involved."

The concert is free and will feature four works by Mozart, including three sonatas.

During his tenure at USC, Williams has played piano solos with the American Matthay Association National Convention and the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society Convention. He also played bassoon at national conventions for the French Historical Society and the International Double Reed Society. He was principal bassoonist with the S.C. Philharmonic Orchestra and was a member of the Carolina Camerata Woodwind Quintet.

"John Williams has been, for many years, one of the more versatile musicians on our faculty, equally at home as an artist on any number of different instruments and in a variety of styles and media," Harding said.
