USC Beaufort is pleased to announce that its 2006-07 five-concert Festival Series will open in October and run through April with 2006 Verner Award winner Charles Wadsworth as host and artistic director.
For the past 18 years, Wadsworth has brought the finest talent from the world's chamber music halls to USC Beaufort's Performing Arts Center for five Sunday afternoon concerts from October to April, and the upcoming year will be no different. A group from the community is organizing Friends of the Festival to support this effort, and USC Beaufort is selling season subscriptions.
On May 3, 2006, Georgia native Wadsworth became the first non-South Carolinian to receive the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Award for the Arts. At the Statehouse and again at a luncheon honoring award winners, Wadsworth was credited with bringing the beauty of chamber music to thousands of South Carolinians statewide. Like many good things in this state, it began on the coast--first in Charleston at the annual Spoleto Festival and then in Beaufort at the University of South Carolina Beaufort's annual Festival Series.
Although France, Italy, and New York City have accorded him their highest awards in the performing arts, it is his adopted state of South Carolina that has chosen for the first time in the 32 year history of the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards to recognize the extraordinary gifts that this non-South Carolinian has generously bestowed on the Palmetto State.
