The Office of Fellowships and Scholar Programs at USC helps students understand national fellowship competitions such as Fulbright, Goldwater, and Rhodes--and helps students complete the application process.
An Orientation Session for any student interested in competing for a national fellowship will begin at 11 a.m. August 22 in the Gressette Room in Harper College, located on the USC Horseshoe.
Two Information Sessions will also be held: at 1:30 p.m. August 25 in the Conference Room in Harper College, and 1:30 p.m. August 28 in the Gressette Room in Harper College.
Capstone Scholars will have their own information session at 4 p.m. Oct. 23 in the Campus Room at Capstone.
Students of all years are encouraged to attend the fall workshops. Unless noted, all workshops are held in the Gressette Room on the third floor of Harper College.
The schedule is:
- Fulbright Grant, 4 p.m., Aug. 28. Available to graduating seniors and graduate students who present a clear program of study to be carried out in a particular academic setting abroad. The grant allows students to conduct research or undertake advanced study or a teaching assistantship, for one year in a foreign country. Fluency in the host language is preferred, and a strong background in American Culture and current events of the host country are critical in selection. USC application deadline is Sept. 5.
- Marshall, Rhodes, Gates-Cambridge, and Mitchell Scholarships, 4 p.m., Aug. 29. Highly competitive, these fellowships are for graduate study in the United Kingdom and cover one to three years of graduate study at various institutions. Each competition requires applicants to have a record of superior academic achievement, record of service and leadership, and be well informed on global issues. The University must nominate applicants in all four competitions. USC application deadlines for all four scholarships is Sept. 5.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Fellowship, 4 p.m., Aug. 30. The U.S. EPA offers fellowships for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral level students in environmentally related fields of study. The Science to Achieve Results (STAR) program and Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) program which support master's and doctoral level students in the environmental fields of study will be discussed. USC application deadline is October.
- Javits Fellowship, 4 p.m., Sept. 5. Provides financial assistance to students of superior academic ability with demonstrated achievements, to undertake study at the doctoral and masters of fine arts level in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences. USC application deadline is September.
- Udall Scholarship, 4 p.m., Sept. 6, Harper College Conference Room. Provides one year of support for eligible expenses up to a maximum of $5,000. For sophomores and juniors who study the environment and related fields, or Native Americans and Alaska Natives who have outstanding potential and are in fields related to health care or tribal public policy. College GPA of at least a B or equivalent; must be nominated by the University. USC application deadline is Oct. 26.
- Truman Scholarship, 4 p.m., Sept. 11. Scholarships up to $30,000 for graduate school. Juniors (any major) preparing for a career in public service; leadership abilities, academic performance and potential, community service records, and commitments to public service. Must be nominated by the University. USC application deadline is Oct. 12.
- National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Fellowships, 4 p.m., Sept. 12. Three years of support up to $115,000 for study and research in the sciences or engineering, leading to master's or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, engineering, behavioral, and social sciences, and in the history and philosophy of sciences. High GPA and high GRE General Test scores and a commitment to a career in research required. Application deadlines are early November but vary according to discipline.
- Goldwater Scholarship, 4 p.m., Sept. 18. Scholarship of up to $7,500 for one to two years of undergraduate study. For sophomores and juniors pursuing bachelors' degrees in natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering; intent to earn a graduate degree in these fields to pursue a career in research and/or college-level teaching; strong GPA and research experience required. Must be nominated by the University; no direct applications to the Goldwater Foundation will be accepted. USC application deadline is Oct. 16.
- Knowles Teaching Fellowship, 4 p.m., Harper College Conference Room. Graduating seniors and graduate students in science, engineering, or mathematics who want to teach high school science and/or mathematics are eligible. Knowles Fellows are supported professionally and financially for up to five years of graduate study and teacher preparation. USC application deadline is early Jan. 2007.
- National Security Education Program (NSEP), 4 p.m., Oct. 25. Supports outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who demonstrate high levels of academic performance and strong motivation to internationalize their education by developing expertise in the languages, cultures, and world regions less commonly studies by Americans. Applicants must be evaluated by a University committee. USC application deadline is Jan. 2007.
- Rotary Scholarship, 4 p.m., Nov. 13. Scholars serve as ambassadors abroad while studying for one academic year. Any country where Rotary Clubs are located is considered, with preference given to those with fluency in language of host country (non-English speaking). All class levels are eligible to apply. Applicants must apply through a local Rotary Club during the spring semester. Rotary Web site is www.rotary.org/foundation. Application deadline to local clubs is Spring 2007.
