Madilyn Fletcher has been named director of the School of the Environment.
Fletcher formerly was director of the Belle W. Baruch Institute since 1996 and helped establish the Carolinas Coastal Ocean Observing and Prediction System (CaroCOOPS), a $9 million NOAA-funded program, in 2002. Her research has focused on marine and aquatic microbial ecology, and she has more than 100 scientific publications to her credit. She also served as editor-in-chief for the scholarly journal Microbial Ecology and has been on numerous panel reviews, advisory committees, and editorial boards.
Fletcher has been president of the Southern Association of Marien Laboratories and the National Association of Marine Laboratories. She also has been a member of the executive committee of the Board on Oceans and Atmosphere of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and served the Board of Governors of the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE).
