San Jose Taiko to appear at USC Beaufort Oct. 22

As part of its 2006-2007 season, Beaufort Performing Arts will present the San Jose Taiko Drummers on Oct. 22.

San Jose Taiko was founded by young Asian Americans searching for an outlet to convey their experiences as third generation Japanese Americans, or Sansei. Looking to Japan for the inspiration, they were drawn to the empowering sounds of the taiko, the Japanese drum--an instrument that is characterized as embodying the spiritual essence and heartbeat of Japan and its people.

The San Jose Taiko Drummers aim to transcend cultural boundaries and to foster greater understanding of Japanese American culture while keeping audiences enthralled.

The group's Beaufort performance begins at 8 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Tickets range from $30 to $40; children's tickets are half-price.

For more information, call the USC Beaufort Office of Public Information at 843-521-3113.
