Global hunger forum at USC set for April 2-5

A new lecture series at USC, The Walker Institute Global Issues Forum, will begin April 2-5 with talks looking at efforts of the United Nations, USAID, and non-governmental organizations in tackling global hunger.

Co-sponsored by the Arnold School of Public Health and the African Studies Program, this year's sessions will be held at 3:30 p.m. in Room 114 of the Public Health Research Center at the corner of Assembly and College streets. All sessions are free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to bring non-perishable food items to any session to benefit the Harvest Hope Food Bank in Columbia.

The schedule is:

  • April 2 "Alleviating Global Hunger: Are We Getting Anywhere?" Edward A. Frongillo Jr., professor and chair, Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, Arnold School of Public Health; "Putting a Human Face on Hunger," photo presentation by Matthew Powell, professional photographer; "Using Food Aid To Achieve Sustainable Reductions in Food Insecurity and Malnutrition: Title II Food-Assisted Development Programs," Anne Swindale, director, Food and Nutrition Technical Assistance Project, Academy for Educational Development.
  • April 3 "U.S. Food Aid: What Has Changed and What Still Needs to Change?" Christopher B. Barrett, international professor, Department of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University; "What Political Commitment Can Do: An Inspirational Response to Hunger in Guatemala," Jose Andres Botran B., secretary of food and nutrition security, Government of Guatemala.
  • April 4 "Hunger in America and What We Can Do About It," Sonya J. Jones, research assistant professor, Center for Research on Nutrition and Health Disparities, Department of Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior, Arnold School of Public Health.
  • April 5 "Tackling Hunger in Emergency and Development Settings: Trends, Successes, and Challenges," Patrick Webb, dean for academic affairs and associate professor, former chief of nutrition for the U.N. World Food Programme, Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, Tufts University; "Challenges to Reaching People in Need with Food Assistance: A View from the Ground," Douglas Casson Coutts, special advisor to the executive director for child hunger, Office of U.S. Relations World Food Programme.
