Short films of faculty members' daughter to air May 31 on S.C. ETV

Short films created by Helen Hill, an experimental animation film-maker, teacher, and the daughter of two University faculty members, will air on S.C. ETV's Southern Lens at 10 p.m. May 31.

The 36-year-old Hill was fatally shot by an unknown assailant in her New Orleans home in January. The Southern Lens program will include commentary by Hill's mother, Becky Lewis, an assistant professor of English and women's studies in credit programs at the University.

Chicken "angels" show up in Helen Hill's film, Scratch and Crow; her film-maker friends have honored her by making it a tattoo design.
"I came into her life when she was a spirited 5-year-old," said Hill's stepfather, Kevin Lewis, a University religious studies professor. "All this time, we cherished her as a daughter; now we're learning how esteemed she is in the experimental film community.

"She was highly moral with a deeply seated religious faith. At the same time, she took an incredibly liberal, encouraging approach toward everyone she met."

One of her short films, Mouseholes, addresses the issue of where her beloved grandfather went after his death. Teapots and chickens were recurring symbols in her films, which "characteristically convey serious, spiritual messages with a light touch," Lewis said.
