In Memoriam: Daniel Walker Hollis

Daniel Walker Hollis, the professor emeritus of history who authored a two-volume history of the University of South Carolina published in the 1950s, died Feb. 7 in Columbia. He was 85.

Services were held Feb. 10 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery and Gardens.

Walker attended Winthrop University in Rock Hill and received his master's degree in history from Carolina in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, including two years in India.

He received his doctorate in American history from Columbia University in New York and taught at USC for 37 years before retiring in 1985. He received the Russell Award for outstanding research and the Garnet and Black Award for effective teaching. He also was a Life Member of the Board of Directors of the USC Educational Foundation.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Belser Hollis of West Columbia, two sisters, a niece, nephew, and three great-nephews.
