Awarded Poets Laureate Fellowship
English Professor Ed Madden is among thirteen poets recently honored as Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellows for 2019. This new award, sponsored by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, supports “poets laureates of states, cities, and counties across the U.S. […] in recognition of their literary excellence and to help support their civic projects.” Madden is currently serving his second term as City Poet Laureate of Columbia.
The awards panel, which included former national Poets Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera, Robert Pinsky, and Natasha Trethewey, among other distinguished members, praised Madden’s poetry books Ark (Sibling Rivalry Press, 2016), Nest (Salmon Poetry, 2014), and Prodigal: Variations (Lethe Press, 2011), and his upcoming Columbia project “Telling the Stories of the City,” which “will incorporate local and youth voices, build on community-based workshops, and create an interactive storymap of the city.”
The English department congratulates Professor Madden on this well-deserved recognition!
