Drs. Qi Wang and Yi Sun of UofSC together with Drs. Negash Begashaw (PI), Gurcan Comert (Benedict College) and Negash Medhin (NCST U) are awarded a research grant from NSF-DMS (DMS-1954532) on “Excellence in Research: Cutting-Edge Research in Machine Learning and Its Application.” The total amount of the award is $466,200 for three years.
The project team consists of faculty with complementary expertise in optimization, game and control theory, statistics, applied and computational mathematics to develop a data-driven machine learning research program accompanied by an integrated undergraduate educational curriculum in data science and machine learning, and complemented by a workforce development pipeline linking research training with student job perspectives. The project team will focus on several applications using data science and machine learning tools, including multi-objective optimization to improve machine learning outcome in clustering, feature selection, and knowledge extraction; developing forecasting model for financial analysis and disease epidemics; discovering constitutive laws and mechanisms in selected materials and life science problems; and incorporating machine learning modules to a hybrid multiscale model for angiogenesis.
