USC Rice School of Law announces 2024 Compleat Lawyer Award Recipients

Nine alumni from the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law were named recipients of the 2024 Compleat Lawyer Awards at a ceremony held at the South Carolina State Museum on Thursday, April 11.

“This year’s Compleat Lawyer Award recipients are dedicated, compassionate servant leaders making a difference throughout South Carolina,” says Dean William C. Hubbard ‘77. “They exemplify the highest standards of professional competence, ethics and integrity in our profession, and we are proud to celebrate their success.”

The awards are given in three categories based on years in practice: Platinum (31 years or more), Gold (16 to 30 years) and Silver (15 years or less).

This year’s Compleat Lawyer Award recipients are:

Platinum Awards
  • Barbara Bowens ‘86, formerly of the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of South Carolina
  • Senator Gerald Malloy ‘88, Malloy Law Firm
  • Mitch Willoughby ‘75, Willoughby Humphrey & D’Antoni
Gold Awards

The Compleat Lawyer Awards were established in 1992 by the USC Rice School of Law Alumni Council (formerly the Alumni Association) to recognize alumni who exemplify the highest standards of professional competence, ethics, and integrity.

Recipients are nominated by members of the Bar or the public and chosen by a committee comprising the chief justice of the Supreme Court of South Carolina, the chief judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the president of the South Carolina Bar, the Rice School of Law’s dean, the president of the Law School Alumni Council, and the president of the Young Alumni Council. For this reason, the Compleat Lawyer Award is considered one of the most prestigious awards law school alumni can receive.

The Bronze Compleat Lawyer awards, presented to three students, will be announced during the Rice School of Law Commencement on Friday, May 3.
