Helping people in the Charlotte area with legal services: Consumer, Domestic Violence, Home Preservation, Healthcare Access, Immigration, Income Security and Tax Disputes
Purpose of project
- To provide opportunities for law students to work along side the attorneys and clients in the legal services field
- To provide skills development and enhancement opportunities for law students
- To create an awareness of the problems and rewards of working on behalf of clients who cannot afford representation
- To observe and participate in the processes of a non-profit organization.
- To assist clients with are facing immigration law challenges
Requirements or qualifications
Law students must:
- be a good academic standing
- complete and submit the Volunteer Enrollment Form
- have an interest in legal services for low-income veterans, seniors, immigrants, people living with disabilities and families with children. Average volunteer time required is 2 hours per week, virtually
Responsibilities of organizations
The Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy must:
- agree to properly supervise the work of the law student
- provide clear and timely instructions
- seek opportunities to expose the students to various tasks
- provide feedback when possible.
Responsibilities of the students
The students must:
- communicate effectively and efficiently with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and the supervising attorney
- complete tasks in a timely and competent manner
- seek assistance when needed
- perform duties professionally
- treat this volunteer opportunity as if it was a paying or for-credit position
