USC joins citywide public service initiative

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin joined University of South Carolina First Lady Patricia Moore-Pastides, Fort Jackson Commanding Gen. Bryan Roberts and Carolina Gas Transmission Corporation President Paul V. Fant as well as business and community leaders from across Columbia to launch an exciting new citywide public service initiative, One Columbia: CityServe

“This is an opportunity for all of Columbia to join forces to make a real and lasting positive impact in our city,” said Mayor Benjamin. “Imagine what would happen if all of us took just one moment to reach out a hand of caring, kindness and service to our fellow man. Imagine what we could do together.”

Set for the week of April 20–28, One Columbia: CityServe is a community-driven intensive week of service designed to engage thousands of citizens across all of Columbia’s communities in an organized, cooperative effort to improve the city.

“Every year for the past six years, and twice with distinction, the University of South Carolina has received the President’s Community Service Honor Roll,” said Moore-Pastides. “We are very happy to join together with Mayor Benjamin and Mr. Fant as well as businesses, schools, churches and our entire community working together to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters.”

As part of this grassroots effort, everyone is encouraged to visit  to find out more information about and how they can get involved and to stay tuned for the upcoming full site launch.

A citywide effort of this magnitude will release hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours into city improvement, uncover previously unserved or underserved needs, create synergy for ongoing community engagement, and raise the pride and investment level of Columbians in our home.

Whether picking up trash from along a stream or river, helping an elderly homeowner paint her front porch, or volunteering to mentor a young child who needs someone to lean on, One Columbia: CityServe is about engaging the energy and spirit of volunteerism that makes Columbia great and challenging all of us to make it even better.
