The Technical Services and Support (TSS) team at Computer Services has installed the Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2) and tested the University applications that are supported and distributed by Computer Services. Service Pack 2 does make significant modifications to the Windows XP operating system, especially to firewall and security services. This service pack is an upgrade to the current Windows XP operating system.
Computer Services does not recommend installing SP2 onto your University computer unless you have authorization from your network administrator (for those covered by an SLA, Computer Services is your network administrator).
There are applications that require manual intervention in order for them to function properly. However, Computer Services has not yet found any University applications that completely break or do not work with SP2 installed.
If you do not know if you are covered by an SLA, go to http://csd.sc.edu/Support/SLAClients.shtml and click on "Desktop Service Level Agreement."
For departments covered by the Service Level Agreement (SLA ) provided by TSS, Computer Services is planning a phased roll-out XP SP2 later in the fall semester. Computer Services recommends that you do not install SP2 on your own until the roll-out is implemented.
For non-SLA departments and offices, contact your network administrator before installing SP2. Departmental network administrators should test and understand the impact on unique departmental applications before installation.
Students may download SP2, but they will have to do so without the help of Computer Services. Aid will be limited for SP2 downloads on student computers that are connected to the USC network. Students are not covered under an SLA.
