USC has narrowed its search for a dean of the College of Arts and Sciences to four finalists, all of whom have visited campus and met with faculty, staff, and students.
The candidates are Mary Anne Fitzpatrick, deputy dean of the College of Letters and Science at the University of Wisconsin; Joseph Glover, associate provost for academic affairs at the University of Florida; Joseph C. Pitt, head of the philosophy department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and John Skvoretz, interim dean of USC's College of Liberal Arts and Carolina Distinguished Professor of Sociology.
The search committee has submitted the list of finalists to President Sorensen and Provost Mark P. Becker for their consideration.
After a dean is named, the College of Science and Mathematics and the College of Liberal Arts will combine to form the College of Arts and Sciences and will be the largest on campus, with more than 500 full-time faculty members, approximately 8,200 students, and some of the University's nationally recognized programs, including English, psychology, history, chemistry, and biology.
The merger was approved by USC's Board of Trustees in December 2003.
