Frank Dunham, a federal public defender from eastern Virginia who represented Yaser Hamdi, a suspected enemy combatant apprehended in Afghanistan, will discuss his legal efforts to get Hamdi released from the Naval Brig in Charleston during a free public lecture at 8 p.m., Nov. 17 in the Law School Auditorium. The free public lecture is sponsored by the Richard L. Walker Institute of International and Area Studies.
After Hamdi was taken into custody, he was transported to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and then transferred to Charleston when it was discovered that he was a U.S. citizen.
Dunham also is representing dirty bomb suspect Jose Padilla.
Dunhan's lecture will focus on the importance of preserving due process and the rights of citizens while protecting U.S. national security.
