Beginning April 5, Computer Services is offering a new way to help train students on the new wireless network. Instead of signing up for a class during the week, USC students can now drop by during specified times in the Computer Services Tech Lab for wireless assistance. Faculty and staff should contact either their network administrator or the Help Desk at 7-1800 for wireless assistance.
The following times will be open to any student needing wireless help during Spring 05, May Session '05, Summer I and II 05:
- Tuesdays, 24 p.m.
- Fridays, 911 a.m., 24 p.m.
All sessions will be held at the Computer Services Building, located at the corner of Blossom and Sumter Streets. Participants must sign in at the main lobby and then will be taken to the tech lab. There is a maximum of 16 users allowed at a time.
Prior to the workshop, participants must have the following:
- Wireless-ready laptop with a recommended wireless card. This can be internal or external. For more information about recommended cards, go to http://csd.sc.edu/wireless/require.shtml.
- A fully powered laptop. AC power in the Tech Lab is limited.
- McAfee Virus Protection. This is available free at http://csd.sc.edu/virus/download.shtml.
- All current virus patches and critical updates. For Windows users, these can be found at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.
If a student has not completed these items prior to the workshop, the student will be asked to complete these items from a wired connection, such as a residence hall room. Students may remain in the workshop and listen to the instructions, but they will be asked to return when the listed items are installed and running on their laptop.
During the workshop, students will receive all of the information and support needed to connect to the wireless network.
For more information, go to http://csd.sc.edu/wireless, or call the Help Desk at 7-1800.
