South Caroliniana Library's Stokes to receive Wofford honorary degree

Allen H. Stokes Jr., director of the South Caroliniana Library at USC, will be presented an honorary degree by Wofford College during its spring commencement ceremonies May 20 in Spartanburg.

Allen Stokes
Stokes received his bachelor's degree in history from Wofford in 1964 and his master's and Ph.D. degrees in history from USC. Described by Wofford as "one of the most unsung of distinguished graduates [of the college]," Stokes has spent his entire career at the South Caroliniana Library.

Within the past 20 years, said Wofford, "virtually no major work on the history of the South, and especially the history of South Carolina, has been accomplished without major praise for Stokes in contributing significantly to the making of each of these books. He is recognized nationally as one of the best archivists and directors of research collections in the country."
