The Museum of Education will celebrate its 30th anniversary at 2 p.m. Oct. 1 in Wardlaw Hall, Room 126.
State Superintendent of Education James Rex will deliver the eighth Charles and Margaret Witten Lecture, and Judge Matthew J. Perry Jr. will receive the first Travelstead Award for Courage in Education for his leadership in integrating the state's schools, hospitals, restaurants, parks, playgrounds, and beaches. The award honors the career of Chester C. Travelstead, dean of the College of Education from 1952 to 1955, who championed racial integration and social justice in South Carolina.
The Museum of Education, housed at the University's College of Education, preserves the educational heritage of South Carolina through archival storage and special events, including the Carolina Shout celebration of teachers. The museum also is home to the S.C. Education Hall of Honor, recent inductees of which include Septima Clark and J.A. DeLaine.
