Chris Toumey, director of outreach for the Nanocenter at the University, will speak on "Mad Scientist Stories--Is Science Evil?" during EngenuitySC's Science Cafe from 6 to 7 p.m., Feb. 12 at California Dreaming, 401 S. Main St., Columbia.
"Mad scientist stories are a way to shout, 'Science is evil!'" said Toumey, "but these stories deliver that message in different ways and the message changes over time. For example, the images of Dr. Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyll are very different today from their original appearances. We'll look at some of these mad scientists and discuss how they pose the question, 'Is science evil?'"
The Science Cafe or Cafe Scientifique is sponsored by EngenuitySC as a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, anyone can explore the latest ideas in science and technology. All ages are welcome, and a background in science is not required. Meetings are always held in venues outside of a traditional academic context, such as cafes, bars, restaurants, and theatres.
