This summer David Melamed has research grants from BOTH the National Science Foundation and the Army Research Office recommended for funding. The ARO grant (1 yr) is at the intersection of mathematical sociology and group processes, to experimentally test a formal mathematical model of influence resulting from status processes and different factions in a group. The NSF grant (2 yrs) tackles a related problem, testing the logic of arguments rather than the mathematics.
