Ron Maris (1936-2023) 

The Department is saddened to announce the passing of emeritus professor Ronald (Ron) Maris. Dr. Maris was a long-time member of the sociology department since his original appointment as department chair in 1973. He chaired the department for ten years, during a time of great growth and institution building. An expert in the sociology of suicide and mental health, Dr. Maris retired in 2001 but was still teaching until 2015 and continued to publish, consult, and provide expert testimony.
