Information about Federal Work Study Funds

Federal work study (FWS) funds are dollars the federal government allocates to USC to help students finance the costs of postsecondary education. The Konduros Public Interest Fellowships are funded in part by proceeds from an endowment matched with FWS funds.

  1. You cannot be enrolled in a class in order to receive these funds. This includes Maymester and any summer school classes.
  2. You must have completed a FAFSA for this current year.
  3. You must complete a FAFSA for next year
  4. You will only be paid if you work the required hours and submit you timecards in a timely manner. Typically you are eligible to be paid for 12 weeks up to 29 hours a week. This amounts to a gross total of approximately $6, 000. The weeks do not have to be consecutive but you should work with your supervising attorney on your schedule. The maximum number of hours you can work in a week is 29. You will only get paid for the hours you work and cannot get paid for overtime. You will be paid on the 15th and 30th of each month if you turn in timely timecards. All but the first payment will be automatically deposited. Additional information will be provided to Fellowship awardees.
  5. This funding is not a grant but treated for tax purposes like regular income. This means taxes and FICA will be calculated and deducted from your paychecks. You should be able to recoup any taxes paid but not FICA.  Everyone’s overall tax situation is different and to help you estimate the amount that will be deducted for taxes check out http://www.taxformcalculator.com
  6. The amount you earn during the summer will be calculated and computed into the amount you contributed for next years FAFSA. In other words your earnings for the summer could affect the total amount you can borrow next year.
  7. You will be expected to meet with Financial Aid by April 1st and complete a Federal Work Study worksheet. The Financial Aid Office will also inform us the date you can start work and when you must end.
  8. You cannot be employed during the summer in any other capacity by the University of South Carolina, this includes as a tutor or research assistant.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
