In the Southeast American Holly is one of the best known evergreen representatives of its genus.  It typically has a columnar crown and its gray-white, smooth bark is very characteristic.  This plant is frequently grown as a specimen tree, and it is adaptable to many soils.  The ripe, red berries may be one of the most attractive features of the plant and boughs of it are commonly used for greenery at Christmastime.  However, those interested in growing a holly tree for its fruit must realize that only female trees will bear fruits and a male tree must be in the vicinity to insure pollination, otherwise fruit will not form.
