| Along with Southern Magnolia, Live Oak is one of the most characteristic and picturesque plants of the South. It is a dominating tree, suitable for cultivation in a wide variety of settings such as parks and golf courses. It requires a great deal of room having the broadest crown of any of its relatives, some branches drooping all the way to the ground around the trunk. Live oak is a natural component of maritime forests along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, and is highly tolerant of salt spray. The wood of this oak is extremely hard and tough, and was much prized as a timber tree for wooden sailing ships. |
