The River Birch is widespread in the eastern USA, from Massachusetts to Florida west to Minnesota and Kansas.  It is the only eastern birch growing at low elevations.  It is primarily a wetland tree and is frequently found at river, pond or lake edges throughout its range and is a common component of bottomland swamps and natural levees.  This tree has received a great deal of attention horticulturally due to its beautiful, peeling bark, which is variably colored, sometimes white to pink to tan.  The bark has been used for utensils, canoes and wigwam covers.  Fall color - yellow.
