The Sourwood is native to Southeastern USA, from Pennsylvania south to the Florida panhandle.  The trunk is gray, thick and deeply furrowed.  This species is at home on acidic soils whether in forests of the Piedmont and Appalachian mountains or in lowland habitats on the Coastal Plain.  "Sourwood honey" is a popular item that bees manufacture from this plant.  The flowers of this plant hang down as they open and then turn gradually upward.  Sourwood trees may produce spectacular foliage, with the leaves frequently becoming bright scarlet in autumn.
